Debra of DIY Natural has collected 15 different ways to use things that we normally throw away. Repurposing items like this reduces the amount of things that end up in the landfill. I have to say she has come up with a lot of creative solutions in this article.

For example: Pantyhose. When she has pantyhose with runs in them, she doesn’t toss them in the trash. Instead she uses them for felting projects like wool dryer balls. (I love wool dryer balls! They cut down on drying time and the laundry comes out so soft).

Debra also uses pantyhose to store onions and potatoes. She explains the best way to do that. In fact she has another suggestion for using the pantyhose once the potatoes and onions have been used up.

This article is filled with creative ways to repurpose things we normally throw away. It’s a way to get maximum use out of everything we own. Very thought-provoking and well-written article.

Adding plants to your home can have so many beneficial effects. But one of the best benefits is that plants help to clean the air! In this article, Daria shares a list of NASA-approved plants that filter out toxic chemicals from the air like benzene. Toxins can enter homes in a variety of different ways — sprays, plastics, furniture, just to name a few. So while you may think the air in your home is toxin-free, it very well may not be.

Daria also reveals how many houseplants NASA recommends for an 1800 square foot house. Best of all, she shares 10 plants that both clean the air and are tough to kill. Click the 10 Fuss-Free Plants that Clean the Air link below to read the article.

Dehydrating is another great way to preserve your garden produce for the cooler months. Fruits, herbs and veggies can all be dehydrated.

In this article, Debra explains how to make a food dehydrator that uses the sun as its heat source. If you get confused at all about the build instructions, just click on the “See the colored image on this page” link for a diagram that really helps. This solar dehydrator doesn’t have racks or shelves. However you could easily ass some small wooden blocks on the interior of the dehydrator to support racks or screens.

One of the uses is as a fertilizer in the garden. I’ve added coffee grounds to rose bushes, azaleas, tomatoes and other veggies with success. Making a coffee “tea” is another way to use coffee grounds in the garden. Or you can add coffee grounds to your compost bin. When you use coffee grounds to your garden it’s one less thing that goes into the garbage, which is a very good thing.
