Mindi of mylove2create.blogspot.jp made the planter boxes out of reclaimed fence wood.  She links to a separate tutorial on making the boxes.  On the front she attached repurposed blinds that she painted with chalkboard paint.  After filling with soil and plants, she wrote the name of each teacher on a planter.

I can think of a lot of uses for this type of project.  You could make larger planter boxes and plant herbs.  Then you could use the chalkboard to label which herbs (or other plants) were in the planter.  The boxes would also be good for organizing school supplies, art supplies and more.
