Kristi of Let This Mind Be In You wanted to start out with a simple wine-making recipe.  She decided to make Apfelwein (Apple Wine) which is a German-style hard cider.  Kristi has some great instructions and photographs.

This does look like a good drink for the first-time at home brewer.  The fermentation process for Apfelwein is a lot more forgiving than brewing other wines and beverages.
